I. INTRODUCTION
The Tony Galvez School of Cosmetology (TGSC) offers a comprehensive training program that prepares students into pursuing exciting and lucrative careers as elite professionals in the beauty industry. The school adapted the international cosmetology structure—that of teaching non-traditional and age-old techniques—by which students, after graduating, receives optimal career prospects. At the core of the program is holistic training. The curriculum, among others, teaches prerequisites in chemistry, anatomy, mathematics, communication, and salon management, including occupational courses such as hair cutting, hair coloring, facial make-up, and nail care. Rarely will one find such a comprehensive course in cosmetology.
TGSC is the ONLY cosmetology school in the Philippines that offers Cosmetology courses with a curriculum based on international standards and global training structure. It trains students intensively and rigorously, thereby producing globally competitive graduates. Here at TGSC, our cosmetology courses comply with International Licensing Requirements—namely in Greece, Canada (Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia, Nunavut, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Saskatchewan, and Yukon), U.K. (London and Isles of Man), Australia (Sydney, Queensland, and New South Wales) and U.S.A. (50 U.S. States).
Professionalizing The Industry Through Quality Training The Tony Galvez School of Cosmetology was established in 1989 to provide a quality standard of cosmetology education in the Philippines. Initially, it provided scholarships to underprivileged but deserving and talented students who were serious about becoming true professionals in the field.
Institute president and founder Tony Galvez is a long-time advocate of professionalizing the cosmetology industry through quality education. Himself a published author and respected industry practitioner, he believes that by adhering to international standards in training and practice, the profession’s status in society can be uplifted, and thereby, in the long run, promote the advancement of the industry as a whole. Although a visionary like him finds such an undertaking difficult—what with the government, for a long time now, has been following age-old pedagogies in which only the basics are learned—Tony Galvez remains unfazed. He hopes to inspire the current system abounding in cosmetology today into adopting better and modern pedagogies that are at par with international standards.
Creating Opportunities For Long-Term Development
We have seen the proliferation of livelihood programs offering crash courses on hairstyling, makeup, and nail care. Although these community-based trainings help alleviate the unemployment rate, they usually last for only a week, some for mere 2-3 days, giving pitifully scant theoretical and practical knowledge to students. That’s when danger comes in. Having received little to poor education in cosmetology, practitioners in this field often render inferior services; at times they inadvertently commit malpractices, and in so doing place clients’ lives in danger.
Moreover, graduates in these courses receive little room for improvement. Because their training is inadequate and their prospect little, they could not contribute as much to the advancement of the community in which they live, whereas a professional could do so.
Not anymore.
The Tony Galvez School of Cosmetology addresses these concerns by molding excellent would-be professionals. Students here are encouraged to pursue careers, become entrepreneurs by establishing their own salons—or, more lucrative, work abroad equipped with solid academic and professional training.

Accreditation
Since 1995, The Tony Galvez School of Cosmetology is accredited by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA). TESDA is a government agency tasked to provide direction, policies, programs and standards on quality technical education and skills development. TGSC is also authorized by the Department of Foreign Affairs to accept foreign students.
Advocating Professionalism
In most developed countries, strict licensing requirements govern the practice of cosmetology. A salon, for instance, cannot operate unless a licensed practitioner owns the business itself. Suppliers can sell only to licensed practitioners. Anyone caught practicing cosmetology without a license is punished accordingly by law. Even acquiring a state license comes with hardships: one has to meet strict standards and requirements, and that includes having both educational and professional credentials.
With such strict standards, cosmetology is a respected practice in developed countries or continents such as United States, Europe, and many others. Hairstylists, makeup artists, nail technicians—these people are regarded as professionals and conduct themselves as such, or else face the consequence of having their license revoked. Throughout his career, Tony Galvez himself has been actively advocating the need to professionalize the cosmetology industry in the country through quality education, professional practice, and eventually state licensing. Indeed, as far back as the 80’s, he was the first and only beauty practitioner to have primarily considered that the cosmetology profession must be professionalized and licensed.
Just think of the precious benefits of having a licensure program for cosmetology. First, the income of cosmetology professionals will increase as they can provide services to elite clients. No longer will patrons be subjected to malpractice. The Filipino cosmetologist will become more confident in taking on opportunities abroad, knowing fully well that his/her skills will merit the satisfaction and continuous benefaction of even the pickiest of foreign clients. Finally, the government, too, can earn substantial income through taxes gained from legitimate salon professionals and businesses.
